Here's why FSU football freshman Jayvan Boggs thinks he can make an instant impact (2025)

It didn't take Jayvan Boggs long to become comfortable with Florida State football.

One of the most accomplished wide receivers in Florida high school football, Boggs has been a standout for the Seminoles in spring practice as a freshman.

He admitted it took a few days of camp to adjust, but Boggs quickly came up to speed with his new team.

"Coming in first day, I didn't have any expectations, I just was trying to get adjusted," Boggs said. "After I'd say that first week ... I was in my groove and ready to go."

Boggs's words have been backed up with glowing reviews from head coach Mike Norvell, offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn and players alike throughout spring practice.

In the lone chance the media had to view a scrimmage, Boggs popped up with a few clean routes and impressive plays.

A crafty receiver, Boggs posted 2,133 yards and 24 touchdowns on 99 catches in his senior season for Cocoa, winning a 2A state title, his third high school title. He won the Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Football honors in 2023 as a junior after a 1,493 yard and 24 touchdown year on 93 catches.

He followed Malzhan to Tallahassee after he decommitted to UCF when Malzahn took the FSU offensive coordinator role. Boggs's familiarity with him helped the freshman come up to speed and develop quicker in the spring.

"That helped me a lot, just going to the UCF games and seeing Coach Malzahn's offense. I went to a lot of them, so I've seen a lot of his offense," Boggs said. "It was kind of easy, just go come in after seeing it all and get into it."

Boggs joins a room led by veteran transfers Duce Robinson and Squirrel White. He said both players have helped him acclimate to college life.

Boggs feels ready to contribute in Year 1

An advanced playmaker for his age, Boggs has a legitimate chance to earn play time as a freshman. He said he expects himself to be a contributor in his freshman season, but he wants to focus on continuing to improve and acclimate.

"My goal was really just to come in and make plays. Every ball that comes to me is mine," Boggs said.

Part of that process revolves around the work he's done with quarterback Tommy Castellanos. The pair worked together in the offseason and throughout spring practice, developing a strong bond.

"Me and Tommy, we've been getting to it this spring," Boggs said. "We've had a very good connection. He's throwing balls and I'm making plays all over the field."

Boggs said he's still adjusting to Castellanos's ability to extend plays with his legs.

"I've had to learn it a lot... I could be running a route this way and now he's scrambling that way," Boggs said. "He keeps the plays alive, all the quarterbacks keep the plays live, but Tommy, he's just different."

The Seminoles had a trio of freshman wide receivers make impact in practice and in some games last season. Lawayne McCoy, Elijah Moore and BJ Gibson turned heads, and Boggs has his sights set on doing the same.

He continues to learn the playbook and become comfortable with the new plays, but Boggs knows his play style, and it's why he's so confident in his abilities.

"I run routes good, I'm a YAC player, physical player," Boggs said. "I just get open, catch the ball and do my job."
